Discovering a New World
The first microscopes, made around 1600, had a single lens wand were much like a powerful magnifying glass. Compound microscopes, those with two or more lenses, produced greater enlargement but caused blurred images. This problem, known as chromatic aberration, was not solved until more than a century later. Meanwhile, Anton Van Leeuwenhoek, who lived in Holland from 1632 to 1723, made hundreds of simple, high-quality microscopes. He was the first person to view and describe the amazing miniature world of protozoa and bacteria.
