Jumping Genes

The scientific study of heredity began with the work of George Mendel. The rediscovery of Mendel's work in 1900 is said to mark the birth of the science of genetics. Geneticists Barbara McClintock, born in 1902, devoted her life to this new science. Ironically, certain assumptions about genetics, strongly believed but wrong, prevented early acceptance of McClintock's exciting conclusions.
